The great thing is that you can even recover a key, even from a computer that won’t boot anymore. We can only assume that they don’t want anybody to re-use a key from an old computer. We’re not really sure why Microsoft went to great lengths to make it difficult to see the product keys for their software, especially since they are stored right in there in the registry and can be read by software, if not by humans. Just that their nature seems to get them blacklisted.
To be clear I’m not suggesting these tools are virus/trojan in content in any way, shape, or form. You either have to un-quarantine them (if allowed) or find an alternative that passes the AV test sigs.
Unfortunately, many enterprise and home-user anti-virus/anti-malware apps now treat these (maybe rightly so) as potential “hack-tools” and often will nuke them when used on a system. Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder is another freeware goodie that is Open Source now as well.
